When water is added slowly to a small amount of calcium oxide taken in a beaker, calcium oxide reacts vigorously with water to produce calcium
hydroxide (or slaked Lime) and a large amount of heat is released. So, it is an exothermic reaction.
The equation for the reaction taking place is:
CaO(s) +H2O(l)→Ca(OH)2(aq) + Heat
It is also a combination reaction as the two reactants water and calcium oxide combine to form a single product, calcium hydroxide.
